Research
Experiences for Undergraduates in
Proteomics and Functional Genomics
at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh
May 28th - August 6th, 2008
Applications Due:
Friday, February 29, 2008
Program:
The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, in association with the National
Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) SITES
Program and the College of Letters and Science, is pleased to announce
an undergraduate research program that will allow undergraduate students
to gain experience in research in proteomics and functional genomics.
Students will work with faculty mentors and other REU student participants
to investigate research questions germane to a variety of biological
disciplines, ranging from biochemistry to animal physiology through
the lenses of proteomics and functional genomics. Detailed descriptions
of possible research projects are available at http://reu.uwosh.edu.
Student researchers will receive training in and have full access to
state-of-the-art instrumentation housed within the NSF
/ Robert E. Moore Proteomics and Functional Genomics Core Facility at
UW Oshkosh.
Objectives:
- Provide undergraduates at decisive stages of their college careers
with practical experience in the state-of-the-art methodologies that
define the frontiers of life science research today
- Increase the global competitiveness of tomorrows life science
workforce by augmenting the number of undergraduates trained in essential
techniques in proteomics and functional genomics
- Increase numbers of women and members of other underrepresented groups
pursuing careers in advanced biological research
- Foster development of diverse, collegial research communities of aspiring
scientists
Support:
All student participants will receive:
- A $4,500 stipend for the ten-week, full-time research experience
- Housing in dormitories on the UW Oshkosh campus
- A complete meal plan
- Travel to and from UW Oshkosh
Environment:
Oshkosh, WI The University of Wisconsin Oshkosh is the 3rd largest
University in Wisconsin. Faculty members within the Departments of Biology
and Chemistry maintain vigorous, student-centric research programs in
a wide variety of research areas. Our smaller size enables faculty to
work directly with and mentor student researchers. With funding from
the National Science Foundation, a state-of-the-art proteomics and functional
genomics core facility was recently established at UW Oshkosh. As such,
UW Oshkosh faculty are ideally situated to work with student researchers
investigating basic research questions with this cutting-edge instrumentation.
The Oshkosh community enjoys pleasant, mild summers. The University
is situated on the Fox River, while the City of Oshkosh resides on the
shores of Wisconsins largest inland lake, Lake Winnebago. The
community bustles with summer activities ranging from weekly concerts
on the Fox River (http://waterfest.oshkosh.net)
to a large international aircraft exhibition (http://www.airventure.org).
Eligibility:
Applicants must be:
- US citizens or permanent residents enrolled in an accredited academic
institution
- Biology, Chemistry, or related majors
- Sophomore or juniors and have completed an entry-level set of biology
and chemistry coursework.
- Seniors with at least an additional term of coursework remaining after Summer 2006 are eligible.
- First-year students with exceptional records and experience will also be considered.
Application:
Prospective student participants must deliver all required application
components by Friday, February
29, 2008. The applicant is responsible for completing
an application packet that consists of: 1) a completed online application
form available at http://reu.uwosh.edu, 2) a brief (1-2 pages) narrative
describing why you are interested in joining our REU Site, 3) a college
transcript(s), 4) two letters of reference, and 5) a resumé.
Partially completed applications will not be considered.
